September: National Preparedness Month

Ready.gov recognizes September as National Preparedness Month to promote family and community disaster planning. This year’s theme is: “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.” Preparing for a disaster can help ease the burden a possible disaster can bring to you and your family.

How can you prepare for the unexpected?

  1. Know the risks associated with your community and how you will receive information. Wireless Emergency Alerts are used by state and local officials to send important information regarding public safety, imminent threat, AMBER, Presidential, and text messages.

  2. Other things to keep in mind: shelter plan, evacuation route, and family/household communication plan.

  3. Update your emergency kit if needed. Keep in mind you need face coverings for everyone over two years old. Add sanitizer and disinfectant to your kit.

  4. Consider specific needs for you, your family, and your home.

  5. Fill out a Family Emergency Plan. Click here to get started!
