Improving Process Efficiency with Contemporary Materials

Chemical Plant Expansion

Our customer, a chemical manufacturer, was expanding operations with a new sodium chlorine production line. Updates to a 30-year-old design called for modern materials, equipment, and instrumentation with a goal to improve efficiency.

Featuring over 10,000 feet of various types of pipe, the updated design included replacing much of the PVC with titanium, a material that is highly resistant to the corrosive nature of sodium chloride. We developed a welding procedure to achieve a consistent set of parameters for the weld process of this unusual and expensive material. To expedite construction, 400 welds were completed over 4 weeks in a controlled environment located offsite. Titanium piping was then shipped to the project for final assembly with inline instrumentation. Our scope also included the installation of tanks, pumps, a cooling tower, a sump, and a scrubber.
