Industrial Duct Replacement

Fabrication

Our team was selected to design and fabricate a replacement duct for a cement manufacturing process. Based on a metallurgical analysis of the original duct, we recommended a shell made of 3/8-inch-thick pressure vessel grade, chrome moly steel as more suitable for the high temperature conditions of the process. Also, the presence of chromium and molybdenum in the steel provides additional corrosion resistance, enhanced oxidation resistance, and better strength at higher temperatures.

The replacement 40-foot duct was fabricated in five sections. Each section measured 8-feet tall, 15-feet in diameter, and weighed 7,200 pounds. Welding and fabrication of the duct sections included the connecting flanges and stiffening rings. A polymer coating for temperatures up to 1200°F was applied to the interior, and the exterior was primed and painted with high-temperature paint.

To enable critical lifts and reduce outage time, we provided engineering design, calculations, specifications, and shop fabrication of monorails, spreader beams, and lifting lugs. In addition, the sections were pre-assembled in our shop to ensure final fitment at the site.  Our team was also on site to manage critical lifts during final installation and manage overall completion of the work within the customer-specified outage schedule.
