A Flagship Example of Integrated Services

by Bill Wildes, Project Manager

We began work on a very large, nearly 3 million dollar Electrical and Instrumentation project for a national wood and forest products company at the beginning of the year and we are scheduled to complete the project in mid-August. The majority of the project was Electrical with some Instrumentation.

The Electrical scope included:

  • Installing 3 new switchgears and disconnects for every motor, 3 electrical panels and 2 transformers and all wiring and components

  • Installing 7,000’ of cable tray (all tray had to be installed vertically so no wood accumulation would happen)

  • Installing 170 lights and 60 receptacles, plus all wiring

  • Pulling 87,000’ of cable and performing 7,500 terminations

The Instrumentation & Controls scope included:

  • Installing 242 instruments, cable and wiring

  • Installing 10 PLC panels

  • Working on additions to 3 existing PLC panels

  • Installing Rupture vent control boxes

The Fabrication work included:

  • Cable tray supports

  • Disconnect stands

Safety and QC

With this large-scale project, we had multiple JSAs for different crews and different tasks within those crews. In addition to daily JSAs and safety areas or topics to be addressed, the team formed a large circle and had a morning stretch-and-flex session.

The quality control program has been excellent and we appreciated the teamwork with Randy Cales, Shannon Caudill and John Thompson.

Team Recognition

We want to recognize our entire Electrical team for their hard work, good craftsmanship and dedication to safety. They have worked over 23,000 man-hours without any incidents, stayed on schedule, and turned over a great product that the customer is pleased with.

We peaked out at around 26 team members in the field, plus Juan, Adam, and me. Working together as long as we have helped the job get done more efficiently because the supervisors are aware of employee strengths and weaknesses, plus the crews have been working side by side and know how each other works. We had a mechanical contractor on site installing the structural steel and conveyors, a contractor for the sprinkler system and fire water pipe, and one subcontractor who tested the two 5KV cables for us.

“I am very proud of what our team has accomplished on this project,'" said Wiley Blankenship, VP of Industrial Solutions. "To date, this has been our flagship electrical project with no safety incidents, great quality and overall management of the project. This project incorporated our full suite of project controls, providing our client with accurate weekly project status and forecasting to ensure their project met schedule and budget.”
